The betting ladder challenge: 30 wins in a row

Sports

Start with a small stake, bet on a strong favourite, and put the whole payout on the next favourite. Thirty steps turn a little into a lot, if nothing goes wrong.

The rule

One bet a day on the most likely outcome at low odds. If it wins, the whole payout becomes the next stake. One loss ends the ladder and you start again from the base stake.

Why people use it

The arithmetic is tempting: thirty wins at odds of 1.10 multiply the stake about 17 times, and at 1.20 about 240 times. Each single bet looks almost safe.

Where it hurts

Almost safe, thirty times in a row, is not safe. If each pick wins nine times out of ten, a full ladder happens about once in 24 attempts. At eight out of ten it is about once in 800. And the bookmaker's margin is paid on every step.

How our bot runs it

Two bots run ladders: one with odds up to 1.15, the other from 1.15 to 1.25. Each takes the single most likely outcome of the day in its range. The first stake is 0.5% of the account; after a loss the next ladder starts again from 0.5%.
